In September of 2007, Jerry's Son Jordan was killed while driving and talking on his cell phone.  Between 2009 and 2011, Jerry spent a bulk of his time doing speaking engagements and lobbying for no texting and hands free legislation. He has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, numerous Boston and NPR radio interviews and has been the subject of dozens of newspaper articles and television interviews.

In 2010, Massachusetts signed its first No Texting law and Jerry has been credited with being instrumental in the passage of this key legislation.

In March 2011, Jerry was received a Trafic Safety Award, presented by  the Administrator of NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), for his work as a Traffic Safety Advocate. Congratulations by President Obama were extended to Jerry by the Administrator, David Strickland.
